Hydrant flushing is done twice a year to move out any build-up of debris from the waterlines. The debris is typically minerals such as iron and manganese. The chemicals that we use are an orthophosphate that encapsulates the iron and manganese molecules and makes them stick to the sides of the pipe. When we flush we change flow velocity which breaks those molecules away from the pipes and gets it out of our system.
All of this flushing means cleaner water for our customers. Performing this at night cuts down on the discolored water coming into our customer’s systems.
